When I first purchased F/V Kelsi & Morgan, we knew the boat needed a lot of work. We had it towed to a local shipyard to do the work. As we got more and more into the repairs, it became apparent that the boat needed far more work than I anticipated resulting in a bill from the shipyard for more money than I had. The shipyard would not release the boat until the bill was paid in full. I was sitting in my truck at the shipyard, feeling down, questioning why I ever even purchased the boat.

At that moment, Jay Gallup, President of Rhode Island Engine, just happened to come by and came up to the window of the truck and asked me what was wrong. I told him the shipyard is looking for more money and I don’t have it. Jay gave me a Rhode Island Engine check, signed by him, and told me to go get my boat! It was quite and amazing and emotional moment in my life.

I have been a customer of Rhode Island Engine Co. since 1982. In all that time I have never heard a bad word said about the company. From working with the owners, mechanics, parts, and service department, it’s always been a rewarding experience. On two occasions I have called after hours to get advice on solving an engine problem. Both times the owner of the company came over to my boat, figured out the problem and had me running for my next day charter.

On one of those occasions, it was a Sunday night. Once I called in my problem late on a Friday afternoon. When I arrived at my dock a mechanic was waiting for me to get started.

When a part is needed, most of the time the parts department will have it sitting on a shelf. But on a rare occasion where they don’t have it, a series of phone calls will be made by the service department with the part being delivered by the following day. If they can’t find the part needed they will build it. Efficiency is Rhode Island Engine’s middle name.

Where an engine problem has occurred, I can’t count the number of times where I have sat down with a mechanic to discuss what the problem is and how to go about fixing it. I honestly don’t recall ever being billed for hours of advice. If I can prep a job before the mechanic arrives, there have been many instances where I have borrowed a number of specialty tools such as come- along or I-beams without even signing my name on a tool list.

Being a charter boat operator, I try to keep a very clean boat. When a break down occurs, you would think that the repair work would make a mess of things. In all my dealings with the mechanics, they have all tried their best to keep the boat as clean as possible because they all take pride in their work.

As for me, I know all the mechanics and welders on a first name basis. Learning their names is easy when you are dealing with the same guys for a period of between 20 and 40 years. There is not a big turnover of help because of the way the mechanics, parts, and service department, and owners work together. This positive working environment is evident as soon as you walk in the front door That alone speaks volumes about the company. There aren’t many family-run businesses anymore, but Rhode Island Engine makes you feel like you are part of their family. I can’t say enough good things about the company, they’re the best!

I started coming to RIE since about 1983 when I was working for Dick Stern on the F/V Donna Lee. When I bought the boat in 1985, I continued using RIE because when we had a problem, it was taken care of. I had the F/V Perception built in 1988. The engine and hydro package was provided by RIE. Jay and Barry both came down to Alabama to make sure the boat and their equipment was being installed to their specs.

We got to RIE in the summer of 1988 with the boat. Jay, David and Barry put about 12 employees on the boat and rigged her out with winches, net reels, gallus and hydraulics and sent us fishing in about 30 days. In 2006 we built the 102′ Jason & Danielle. The Gallup’s were involved in every step of the way with engines, winches, net reels, etc. They made numerous trips to Alabama to make sure the whole process went smoothly. We are still going to RIE with all our projects. The nice thing is that I still recognize employees from back in 1985. In 35 yrs. that we have had a relationship, I have nothing but praise.

My name is Peter Reposa. My family has been in the commercial fishing business since the 1950’s. We have always had most of our work done at RI Engine and not just engine work but Hydraulics, winches, welding, and net drums. Even when we fished out of New Bedford we would steam home if RI Engine couldn’t make it up on the road. They stand behind their work 100%.
